Biscuits, Wine & the Story of Place
A Hands-On Culinary Experience in Belmont, Charlottesville
Food tells the truth about a place.
Long before Charlottesville became known for award-winning restaurants and celebrated vineyards, it was sustained by grain, butter, fire, and community tables. The Southern biscuit is humble, but it carries centuries of agricultural history, labor, tradition, and hospitality within its layers.
This hands-on culinary experience begins with that story, guided by a Charlottesville local guide.
Guests will learn traditional Southern biscuit techniques from a local chef in a women-owned Downtown kitchen while exploring the regional foodways that shaped Virginia’s tables. We discuss wheat cultivation, milling traditions, evolving cooking technologies, and why biscuits became both everyday sustenance and a symbol of welcome throughout the South.
After the class, guests gather for a thoughtfully prepared three-course lunch, each course paired with Virginia wines from a women-led winery. This food and wine experience reflects a through-line of women’s leadership in Charlottesville’s culinary and wine community, from kitchen to vineyard, past to present.
This is not simply a cooking class; it is a cultural experience and an exploration of how Charlottesville’s history and modern hospitality meet at the table.
